Former Stryker Neurovascular president medical innovation post

March 1, 2023 By Sean Whooley

Having spent his 36-year career across a range of companies in medtech, Paul is set to take over the University of Utah Health Center for Medical Innovation (CMI). His appointment becomes effective April 1, 2023. The center supports student, faculty and staff efforts to develop medical devices and solve healthcare problems.

A large chunk of his experience came across the last 15 years, when he served as global president for Stryker Neurovascular. Paul told the university that he brought this business arm from "a little handful of employees" to 1,200. The business operated across 70 countries around the globe.

Paul's career spans neurology, neurovascular and cardiovascular applications. In addition to Stryker, he worked at Procter & Gamble and Boston Scientific. His leadership spans organizations focused on technologies for neurovascular conditions, peripheral vascular disease and abdominal aortic aneurysms.

A resident of Salt Lake City, Paul graduated from the University of Utah in 1987. His wife, Jana, graduated the same year, while two of their four children attended. Paul's great-grandfather was in the university's 1850 graduating class — its very first.

"Paul sees his latest mission as perhaps his greatest challenge: bringing together students, faculty, and staff from a diverse set of backgrounds and interests to develop the next generation of medical tools and technology that can save lives and improve the quality of life," the university's online post reads.

"We’re in the golden age of medical device innovation where we can build and design things that we only dreamed of 30 years ago," Paul said. "It's just one of those great moments where everything is coming together, and I want to be a part of that."
