When trying to find the best wood glue for your projects, it's best to start by knowing what options are available. There are several different types of wood glue, and we describe the main ones below.

Polyurethane, hide, and PVA glues typically have a stated shelf life of around one year if unopened, whereas a bottle of unopened CA glue can last anywhere from five to 10 years. The stated shelf life on a bottle of glue is generally a way for the manufacturer to be covered, but most of these glues can last up to two years or more if stored in a cool, dry place.

Once you open a bottle of glue, most types will start to lose their efficacy after about a month and can even dry up completely; if you buy a large bottle and don't use it up, it could end up being wasted, so it's best to opt for a smaller bottle for smaller projects.

Glues are generally classed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Decorative Hardwoords Association (formerly Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association (HPVA)) as either Type 1 (fully waterproof) or Type 2 (water resistant).

Most types of wood glue, including PVA, CA, and polyurethane glues are waterproof and moisture-resistant; PVA can also be easily cleaned up with water, whereas any polyurethane, epoxy, or CA glue residue must be cleaned with mineral spirits. The main differences in the types of wood glue are the strength and price. Less expensive wood glues are typically less strong when compared to more expensive formulas. "It's all due to the chemical makeup of the glue," says McCall. "For example, epoxy or polyurethane glues are some of the strongest glues you'll find. PVA glues aren't quite as strong, but they tend to be more affordable."

Some wood glues are more permanent than others. McCall advises that polyurethane wood glues are extremely strong and durable. "Once cured, polyurethane glues will be almost impossible to remove," he says. "However, other types of wood glues, such as CA, are not as permanent."
